Pear growers worried about impact of fire blight

There is growing concern among Victorian pear growers about the possibility of the disease, fire blight, entering the country.

Biosecurity Australia has approved apple imports from New Zealand, under specific certain quarantine measures.

Fruit growers are concerned the measures do not go far enough.

Gary Godwill grows pears in Shepparton and says the the industry would be wiped out if fire blight was introduced.

“It’s a big issue to the apple grower but it’s a massive issue to a pear grower. Pears are particularly susceptible to fire blight,” he said.

“Here in the Goulburn Valley we grow about 80 to 90 per cent of Australia’s pears.

“New Zealand doesn’t have a pear industry, New Zealand has fire blight, it’s as simple as that.”
